Role: eBay Department Value Check

Overview

The purpose of the eBay Department Value Checker is to sort through items and find out if their protentional value.

In this role you will be sorting through equipment that has already been inventoried and is awaiting for its value to be determined. This process is straight forward but will take time to perfect.

 

 

Process

First get a pallet to be value checked and bring it over to the sorting out area. Also set up an empty speedpak for the scrap items. The scrap pallet should be replaced when its at least half full. If only a few items were scrapped from the previous pallet, then keep using it.
With the pallets set up, start collecting a few items and place them on your work bench. Try to get items that appear to go together or that maybe the same, if possible. If there are multiple items that are the same, not similar, if one is worth testing, then it can be concluded that they all are worth testing. However, be mindful of condition. If an item has water damage or other types of damage, it should be evaluated differently.

Start by reviewing the item and verifying that it has an inventory label on it. If the inventory label is missing, briefly check the pallet to see if it fell off. If the label still can’t be located, notify your supervisor so that they can contact the other department about this issue.

Once the inventory label has been located, proceed with value checking the item. During this level of value checking, you are trying to determine if an item should be tested or not. Some items will require deep analysis, but not all.

The base line value that we are looking for is $30, sold. If an item is only active, then the lowest active price would need to be at least twice the minimal value as noted below.

Price Minimal Based on Item Type

Rack Mount Networking Equipment: $100 or more

Non-Rack Mount Networking Equipment: Greater then $45

Cisco Meraki Networking Equipment: $100 or more

Rack Mount UPS: $150 or more

Non-Rack Mount UPS: Greater then $80

small items less then 5lbs: $30

Factors to consider

  • The size of an item
  • The weight of an item
  • Is it selling and what is the ratio between active and sold
  • Is the item damaged or dirty
  • How long has the item been active

Serial Number:

A serial number will be unique to that particular item. It is not a model or part number.

If Serial number is the only number on an item, then search brand and item type.

Value Check Guidelines

Value checking of the item will be preformed using eBay.com. You will be able to check if an item has sold and when it sold. This is important to know if there is demand for an item. Many items will be found on Google, however, those are active prices. There is no real data if the item has ever sold.

Review the item and find the correct brand and model that is on the item. Do not use the information on the inventory label. If the item doesn’t have a model, check for a part number. Or if the model pulls up a lot of different looking items, then the part number may help narrow down the list to relevant items.

When searching for an item on eBay, start by filtering by the completed listings. And sort those by the most recent; this will provide a snapshot of the current demand. If there are any completed listings review the top 6 listings, just the title and its overview picture. Only click on the listing if more information is needed. If the items sold match the item on hand and its price is above the limit, then it’s good to pass on to the next step.

If less then 6 items have sold, or none have sold, maybe the listing had ended, but not sold, then you’ll need to review active listings. Side note: if there are no active listings, verify the brand and model were typed in correctly. Possibly try searching without brand. If still no results, proceed to keep the item.

Sold Listings

Start your search by looking at all the sold listings. These listings should be sorted “Ended Recently.” This will provide a quick snap shot at the current value of the item. Value is always changing, but this is where the value of a particular item is at. Check over a few listings and if those values are at or over the minimal price for the item type, keep the item. However, if only a small handful of items have sold, less then 5, then you should also check active listings to see if there are any active listings and what might be the demand ceiling.

Active Listings

If the item is only active but none have sold, additional research will need to be preformed.
First sort lowest to highest, this will generally provide the upper limit of what buyers are willing to pay. The active price will need to be at least 2x higher then the required sold price that are list above. The weight of the item should also be considered, the heavier an item, the higher value it needs to have.

Click on the listing and try to determine how long the item has been listed. eBay sorta hides this information, but there are a few ticks to get an idea as to when the item was listed. If the listing has been revised, eBay will list each date the listing has been revised. Usually a listing isn’t revised right after its listed, however it will provide a base line. If the item hasn’t been revised, then sort the listings by “Time: newly listed.” In this view, eBay will show the month and day and item was listed, but not the year, however the listings will be in chronological order. Click on the top 2 or 3 listings checking if they have ever been revised, if so, use that year as a starting point working your way down to the lowest price listing. If multiple years have passed before you get to the lowest priced listing, then the item is probably scrap, even if the item is priced at a few hundred dollars. Always ask your manager if unsure how to proceed with an item.

No Results found

If no results are found, check active or completed if on the active screen. If still nothing comes up, verify the spelling and spacing is correct.

Be careful not to scroll pass “Results matching fewer words.” Everything below this line is eBay guessing it can find something you want to see. These will not be the correct items. If you see this message check spelling and active listings, there may not be anything on eBay.

 

If the item can’t be found on eBay and spelling has been verified, check with management whether the item should be passed through. Some item that can’t be found do have value, but it hasn’t been available for awhile. Other items, however, do not have any value. It will take time, but with practice things will start to make sense.

 

Next Steps

Now that a value has been found, is it worth testing? Based on the research that has been preformed, is this item worth more as a tested item or scrap? Scrap has value and if the item isn’t selling for the minimum value we are looking for then its scrap.

If the item passed value checking; place a green OK sticker on the inventory label. Be sure not to cover up any of the text.

Put Away

Place items on your cart to be review. When the cart is full, not over filled, contact the team lead or manager to review the items. After the items have been confirmed, place them into the scrap pallet or To Be Tested shelf.

Once cart has been empty, start the process over until the pallet is empty.
